What is Coaching all about?

Coaching - is all about helping people get from where they are in their life to where they want to get to.

If everyone is being honest with themselves, I think we could all do with improving an area or two of our lives.

But why don't people do anything about it?

Everyone knows what to do in life to become more successful but they don't do what they know.

It is a Coach's job to help people get what they want in life in by breaking down the barriers that people impose on themselves.

The best analogy you can ever use is that of a Personal Fitness Trainer.

When you go to a gym they will first ask you what your goals are:

Lose weight?

Lose fat?

Build muscle?

Build endurance?

Increase stamina?

And Etc

They will then see where you are at with regards to your goal.

So for example, if you want to lose body fat they may ask you to take a body fat composition test that will measure your current levels of body fat, you may be asked to take a fitness test, asked what your current eating habits are etc.

After establishing exactly how much you want to lose and over what period of time you want to lose it the trainer will then devise a plan of action of what you must do in order to achieve your fat reduction goals.

Along the way your personal fitness trainer will encourage and motivate you, ask you questions about your motivations and any barriers that you face and will help you.

The end goal of a trainer is to help you achieve your goals a lot quicker and more effectively than if you did it yourself.

A Life Coach does EXACTLY the same as a Personal Trainer but with areas of your life.

This could include: Confidence and self esteem - Feel good about yourself - Remove the self doubt - Meet new people and feel confident - Speak in front of groups. Career - Know what career is for you - Get a better job - Do your job better - Get a promotion. Relationships - Develop listening skills - Work through problems with your partner - How to get through tough times - Build stronger bonds.

Communication skills - How to communicate with anyone - How to make small talk with strangers - How to get your point across effectively. Losing weight/health - Improve your health - Reduce stress - Sticking to a healthy eating plan - Sticking to an exercise plan.

Dreams and achievements - Set some compelling goals - Work out what you want from life - Provide direction and purpose -Have more fun - Have more energy. Money/Finance - Earn more money - Save more money - Work out and stick to budgets more effectively.

Getting what you want in life - Becoming more organised - Getting rid of barriers and negative thinking - Manage your time more effectively - Discover your values in life - Remove the clutter that bogs you down - How to stay focussed Coaching is forward looking and focused on the action you are willing to take to get what you want out of life.

Sometimes you just can't see the wood for the trees!

You so are wrapped up in everyday life that indeed life just passes you by!

Well, coaching enables you to see different alternatives and to take a step back and actually examine your life and all of it's component parts.

This in turn leads to greater: " Self-awareness " Focus " Accountability A Coach Is . . . " Your own personal trainer to enable you to achieve your goals " Your champion during a turnaround. " Your trainer in communication and life skills. " Your sounding board when making choices. " Your motivation when strong actions are called for. " Your unconditional support when you take a hit. "Your mentor in personal development. " Your co-designer when creating an extraordinary project. " Your beacon during stormy times. " Your wake-up call if you don't hear your own. " And most importantly, the professional coach is your partner in helping you have all of what matters most to you.

How does coaching work?

You now know what coaching actually is, so how does it work?

Well, coaching can be conducted through a number of mediums - here are the most popular: - sessions in person - sessions on the telephone - sessions using email - Group coaching sessions in person - Group coaching through the telephone.

No matter what method is used the approach is the same.

During each coaching session the coach and the client will discuss and explore the clients' journey including their goals, wins, challenges, and opportunities, as well as develop fieldwork for the coming week.

Fieldwork isn't like the homework you were assigned in school.

It consists of action steps to move you closer toward your goals and dreams.

The client brings the agenda and the coach brings the coaching skills to create a partnership that moves the client forward. The client calls the coach at their scheduled time each week.

One-on-One Coaching: The structure of coaching in the main is flexible.

The basic coaching arrangement design consists of: " Regular on-going coaching sessions (typically by phone/email) " Exercises to increase self-awareness, encourage creative thinking, and develop practical skills. " Full confidentiality " Quartlery evaluation and review, along with strategies for ongoing support.

Coaching sessions are usually scheduled weekly, lasting from a half-hour to an hour.

Sessions may be focused on one specific goal or challenge that the client is facing, or on a much broader set of personal or professional issues.

Group Coaching / Team Coaching: Any one-on-one coaching program can be tailored to a group or team coaching program.

This is the most cost-effective model for providing coaching throughout an organisation.

Executive Coaching

Coaching services for the business world.

Executive coaching, as the name suggests, is generally aimed at business executives in the work environment.

This usually takes the form of personal coaching on a one-to-one basis rather than working with corporate groups.

In the face of the increasing demands and pressures of the modern, rapidly changing, business environment, executive coaching is about helping you to achieve your full potential.

Whilst improving your effectiveness in terms of leadership and decision-making is a key aim of coaching for the executive, business coaching can equally be about achieving personal fulfillment and balance for the individual.

The difference between personal and executive coaching

While there are many similarities between personal and executive coaching, there are also many differences.

The goal setting aspect of the relationship will of course be more business orientated.

It may be geared towards sales targets or people management rather than personal goals such as improving health and fitness.

One of the great benefits of executive coaching is that a manager or leader can discuss and work on weaknesses in a confidential and safe one to one environment.

Such weaknesses cannot generally be openly discussed in front of team members or more junior colleagues.

"Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare"

There are several areas in which business coaching can be valuable.

Leadership Training Develop effective leadership techniques and improve your personal impact.

Training and development is one of the most crucial aspects of effective management. Financial Awareness Improve your understanding of key financial concepts and tools in order to make better decisions.

Management Training Improve your people management skills so that you can achieve better results from your team or employees.

Time Management Learn how to manage your time more effectively.

Develop your own teamwork skills.

Executive coaching services - what do they provide?

This area of coaching is becoming hugely popular worldwide, and is offered by both companies and individuals.

Coaching will usually be by telephone, and can be at your home or office giving you complete flexibility and maximizing the efficient use of your time.

Your coach is your partner, working with you to achieve the success you desire.

Any information you share with your coach will remain strictly confidential.

Your coach can act as an independent sounding-board for you to explore your goals, visions and ideas.

"Keep away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great, make you feel that you too can become great." Mark Twain

Executive coaching, in some form, has been around since the first successful manager produced the first successful team. The ability to bring together various talents, skills and personalities by training and coaching them through challenging new ideas and possibilities is not an original concept.

However, the new and massive interest which business has in these skills, which are found consistently in top managers, has produced some incredibly powerful and successful coaching models which can be used to help virtually any keen and applied executive make it to the top.

Financial Awareness

The need for finance training and understanding Today's leaders need a greater financial awareness and understanding of financial information than ever before.

Financial awareness will lead to better informed business decisions.

Financially aware managers are able to consider the implications of their decisions on the business, and can also understand and monitor financial information from both internal and external sources.

Thousands of sales managers, departmental heads, managing directors and business owners wished that they and the people they employed knew more about how the finances of business operate.

Whilst effective operation of the business continues to be essential, it is equally vital that poor business decisions are not made because decision makers are not fully aware of the implications on the financial structure of their businesses.

An executive coaching program in financial awareness can address this need.

What do you need to know?

A basic level of financial understanding for business managers and decision makers should incorporate financial planning, costing and budgeting.

The following areas of business finance may be considered essential;

* Understanding financial reports: Profit and Loss, The Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statements

* Key financial ratios: Profitability, Capital Turnover, Return on Capital, Current Ratios

* Business finance: The Business Cycle, Planning, Year End Activities, Expense Control

* Budgeting and Costing: Budget monitoring and control, Variance Analysis, Cost planning and control Finance is a powerful factor in the success of any business.

Most businesses fail not due to poor levels of business but due to poor cash management.

As a leader, you are probably not looking to become a finance expert, but want to apply financial awareness to your situational leadership decisions.

You will want to find a coach or trainer that can explain it simply without the financial jargon yet in a way that adds real value to your leadership skills.

Check your own financial awareness by considering the following questions;

* What is a balance sheet? *

*Why is it important to understand cash flow? *

*What is equity and gearing and why are they so crucial to a business looking for financial aid and loans? *

Why is net profit not necessarily the be all and end all of a business?

*Strange but true! *

"What is the hardest task in the world? To think." Ralph Waldo Emerson

What if you could increase turnover without having to invest any more to do it?

How can you retain current levels of profit and turnover and yet release money to divert into other areas of your business?

Coaching vs. Training

How is coaching different from training, and what are the benefits?

There are certainly no shortage of financial awareness courses and finance training available and many organizations spend large sums on training in this area.

However, training is not always effective.

Often this is because most finance training courses are classroom based and do not allow for the skills to be put into practice, and there is no provision for feedback or ongoing support.

Some of the advantages of coaching over training include;

* Coaching is fluid and flexible, with the agenda set by the individual

* Coaching works with the client to clarify values and enhance motivation

* Coaching is personalized and geared towards the individual's needs and aspirations

* Coaching is usually, and ideally, voluntary

* The coaching process includes ongoing feedback and continuous learning

* Coaching is about promoting sustained behavioral change Executive business coaching will enable you to gain the financial awareness you need by working with an expert a one to one basis.

You will gain an insight into business and finance and have access to impartial advice.

Through better understanding of company financial information, business managers and teams can make better informed business decisions - they can consider the implications that these decisions have or could have on the business and can also monitor and interpret financial information from their customers and competitors.

Health and Lifestyle Issues

What do the words health and lifestyle mean to you?

For many people, the word health is represented by images of highly toned, fit people working out in a gym or competing in some kind of energetic sport.

Mention the word lifestyle and many people associate a good lifestyle with lifestyle accessories such as driving "'the right car", going on holiday to exotic locations, dining in fine restaurants and being invited to sophisticated parties.

In other words, it's about living life through material identifications.

Aspiring to all of these things is fine, although we would ask you to think about what it really means to be "healthy, wealthy and wise".

Can it really be summed up in someone who is physically fit, earns lots of money and has a PhD in Philosophy?

Perhaps there is far more to health than just the physical aspects.

In addition, there is mental health, emotional health, and spiritual health which can all be seen to work together.

Lifestyle can be just as diverse and again we would suggest that it is much more than the money you earn or the cars you drive.

Goals and motivation

Setting and achieving goals Set yourself a goal!

It seems to be one of the greatest phrases of the last decade.

What is a goal and why don t we always achieve our goals?

Try explaining to someone who has never ridden a bike, how you learnt to ride one.

You will probably find it impossible, it is much more complicated than simply saying it s something to do with balance. Perseverance and the belief that it can be done coupled with the desire to do it.

The moment when you first ride that bike having fallen off it time and time again is the most wonderful feeling in the world and what s more it suddenly feels so easy.

Have you ever watched a baby or very young toddler grasping for their bottle?

It is hardly a very smooth affair.

The hand zig zags around rather precariously and tries to grab the bottle, which often gets knocked over in the process. When it does get knocked over the toddler usually screams for an obliging parent to reposition the bottle so the cycle can happen again and again until at last the goal can be executed smoothly.

Therefore applying a mathematical analogy we could suggest that goal achievement could be expressed as desire + persistence = success.

Nothing new in this other than have you ever stopped to consider that success in the equation is relative and not necessarily linked to our popular ideas of success?

Success could easily be something we don t want if we have actually trained our mind to achieve failure.

Suppose for a moment that as a child, despite being capable physically and mentally, you had told yourself that the only outcome possible from attempting to ride your bike was failure.

Over time, your mind would happily oblige and orientate you towards this outcome.

Time Management

Do you ever wish that you or your team were better at managing your available time more effectively to achieve your objectives?

In today's competitive environment, time management and goal setting skills are vital. Increasing productivity at all levels is often a strategic goal, and poor use of time is a real problem.

Have you ever found that when you manage to release yourself from a time-consuming task or laborious activity that your productivity and fulfillment does not improve?

Sadly, we often fill the time saved or created with yet another ineffective activity, creating further frustration.

Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff that life is made of. - Benjamin Franklin

The idea of time management has been around for more than 100 years, but don't be fooled by the expression.

Time can't be managed; we can only manage ourselves and our use of time.

Time management is actually self management, and it's interesting that the skills we need to manage others are the same skills we need to manage ourselves: the ability to plan, organize, monitor, direct and delegate.

There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them. -Dr. Denis Waitley
